LOOK WHAT I WOKE UP TO YESTERDAY!!

Well, in case you haven’t heard, Suzanne is back. 😏

March 18, 2025 we get to hear the story of the Second Quarter Quell, aka the 50th Hunger Games.

Now all us diehard book fans out there know this is Haymitch’s games. (Spoiler alert?) 😏 But will we actually be following Haymitch? 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ Obviously, we’ll find out more in a few months, but I wanted to take a moment to throw out my thoughts for potential protagonists and plot discussions. But first I must admit, I’m excited that we’ll be talking about propaganda in this one! (Oh and I guess Hume’s philosophy will be cool too. 😅) And of course, I want to go back and reread the trilogy to look around for the clues Collins has already left, and then to see how much of that is really true now (as in March of next year).

My Protagonist Options:

1) Haymitch — As much as I would love to hear what Collins’ Haymitch actually sounds like (as opposed to my interpretation of him 😅), this seems a little too obvious to me. We have already been given a fair amount of details regarding his back story from the original trilogy, at least enough to sufficiently infer about. But since propaganda will be a discussion in this new book, maybe there is more than we been previously led to believe.

2) Entirely new character — anyone else want a story about some random person in District 6 or 9? 😂 I would not put it past Collins to introduce a new character we didn’t know we needed in the world of Panem.

3) The continuation of Snow or Tigris’ story — I can see a potential there, though once again seems too obvious.

4) Another gamemaker back story — I’m thinking Plutarch Heavensbee. Since he’s kind of the mastermind behind the rebellion 25 years later and comes out of retirement for the 3rd Quarter Quell, could this be the story of what sparked his initial motivation that led to the events several years later? 🤔

5) Peeta’s dad or Katniss’ mom - Like Haymitch in the original trilogy, we know all these characters are of similar age and we are given interesting snippets of their backstory. Perhaps we’ll get to see the world of Panem through their eyes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My thoughts on plot discussions and other things:

1) The Everdeen’s backstory — So, Katniss makes mentions recognizing her mom at the reaping ceremony, disheartened by one of her friends being reaped. The one Haymitch protects at all costs until the bitter end. (I may need to cross reference this again, as it’s been a bit since I read Catching Fire 😅). But this got my gears turning, since we already know the outcome of the games, much like we did for BOSAS… Are we going to be outside the arena entirely, seeing life from the perspective of the everyday citizens of the Districts? Like, as I mentioned above, Katniss’ mom’s perspective? We also know from the 10th anniversary interview that Collins has the Everdeen’s love story mapped out. And now that we know about the Covey and their undeniable connection with Mr. Everdeen, I see a high probability of Collins answering those burning questions BOSAS raised. Or at least for me, put an end to some of the fan theories flying around out there. 🙃

2) I am curious to know the length and point of view she’s writing in. Is it another 500 pager or will this one be a little shorter? And to date she has never written from dual character perspectives or third person omniscient point of view. Those could add another interesting twist to this story. Going back forth between different characters or being cognizant of multi characters thoughts and feelings would be a treat for me.

Those are my initial thoughts in light of yesterday’s announcement. But let the record show, as long Suzanne Collins keeps whipping out books, I will be here to read them and take into consideration what she has to say about our world and society.

I’ll be back with more thoughts as updates continue to come out. 😜
